Abstract. Miscanthus is an emerging crop with high potential for bioenergy production. Its effective sustainability depends greatly on the spatial location of this crop, although few modelling approaches have been based on real maps. To fill this gap, we propose a spatially explicit method based on real location data. We mapped all of the miscanthus fields in the supply area of a transformation plant located in east-central France. Then, we used a boosted regression tree, machine learning method, to model miscanthus presence/absence at the level of the farmer's block as mapped in the French land parcel identification system. Each of these modelling spatial units was characterised on agronomical, morphological and contextual variables selected from in-depth spatially explicit farm surveys. The model fostered a two-fold aim: to assess the farmers' decision criteria and predict miscanthus location probability. In addition, we evaluated the consequence of possible legislative constraints, which could prevent the miscanthus to be planted in protected areas or in place of grasslands. The small and complex-shaped farmer's blocks that were predicted by our model to be planted with miscanthus were also characterised by their great distance from the farm and the roads. This kind of result could provide a different perspective on the definition of "marginal land" by integrating also the farm management criteria. International audience ; From 6th to 15th October 2016 the Veneto Region organized, in collaboration with ITLA (International Terraced Landscapes Alliance) the Third World Meeting on Terraced Landscapes "Paesaggi terrazzati: scelte per il futuro/Terraced landscapes: choosing the future". The Meeting took place in Venice, Padua – plenary conferences – and in ten different terraced venues of the Italian peninsula where the thematic sessions took place. The innovative Meeting articulation involved more than two thousand participants: researchers, scholars, representatives of local administrations, technicians, tourism operators, farmers, artisans, inhabitants. The report of the Meeting, along with its #nal outcomes, is organized in the first part of the volume. The second part of the publication is dedicated to the collection of the scientific contributions, which were written on the issues addressed by the Congress, offering an important overview of the state of art and studies on terraced landscapes of Italian regions, and European and extra-European countries – in particular Peru, China and Japan. The book aims at promoting a widespread and aware knowledge of the world terraced heritage, with informative, cultural and educational purposes, which can also be used to support the policies for sensible management, enhancement and protection of the terraced landscape's heritage. Agronomists have long expertise in designing new cropping systems to face environmental issues like water resource pollution, soil erosion or biodiversity reduction. They also have designed new theoretical spatial organizations of land use embracing these new cropping systems and analyzed individual farmer constraints for the set-up of these spatial organizations. But very little has been done about local land recombination between farms (LRBF) to overcome the limitation of an individual farm approach. LRBF corresponds to time-limited field exchanges between farmers, mostly for cash crop return period constraints. If they are well driven, such LRBFs could, for instance, help reduce pesticide load on risk areas. We propose a global design method to facilitate new LRBF design: (step 1) identification of existing situations of LRBF on large agricultural areas, (step 2) analyse of their socio-technical determinants by farmers' surveys and (step 3) support the design of environmental friendly LRBF in real situations. The first step of the method, presented in this paper, is based on the Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS) which is the tool used by the European Union to determine, every year, the eligibility of agricultural land for the subsidies of the Common Agricultural Policy. Beyond the administrative purposes, LPIS data can be used to describe agricultural landscape dynamics but LPIS are complex to use. For instance, in the French LPIS, called RPG (Registre Parcellaire Graphique), the elementary geometry is the farmer's block which associates several adjacent fields if they belong to the same farm. Crucial farmer's block attributes like the anonymized farm number and even the polygon identity code are voluntarily changed every year. Hence, a landscape level use of the RPG requires the development of specific agrogeographical models. RPG Explorer is a computer tool integrating a range of models and procedures to ease the use of RPG data. For the first step of our method we used it to ease the analysis of land recombination between farms. We applied it on different French regions (NUTS 3 European level) and we proposed a first typology of LRBF situations based on criteria, such as the number of farms involved in each type of LBRF, the frequency of land recombination or the type of crops driving the land recombination. This typology will be then improved through farmers' surveys (second step of the methodology) for a better understanding of the socio-technical determinants of LRBF and finally the design of new LRBF (third step).

In particular, the undergoing processes (e.g. urbanization or land abandonment) and the multiple ecosystems services provided by agricultural areas are requiring to broaden the research at the regional level. Since some decades, the European Union is promoting the collection of agricultural data to evaluate the farmers' eligibility for subsidies and to assess the Common Agricultural Policy performances. Part of these datasets is being increasingly used beyond their administrative functions, as for the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and the Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS). Starting from a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature using these datasets, we will discuss two examples of their application for characterizing cropland and cropping systems. Our aim is to discuss the relevance of these datasets as tools to improve the monitoring and management of agroecosystems at the regional level.

An introductory literature review highlights the growing attention within the processes taking place at farming region and landscape scale beside the classical spatial scales at cultivated/experimental plot level. This recent evolution in agronomy finds its origin in newly emerging land management issues. Meanwhile, geography and other disciplines are stressing the need for a greater integration of multifunctional agricultural activities into the decision-making processes at the various levels of land management, such as provinces, municipalities or watersheds. This requires also that studies on farmland management include explicitly the different environmental and social contexts influencing farming activities. In this paper we aim to analyse how recent agronomic oriented research are facing and supporting various land management issues. We have compared five interdisciplinary PhD theses examining their definitions and methods of analysis for: the farming system, the local land management issues at stake, the spatial scale selected for the study, the stakeholders' involvement and the interaction with other disciplines. Common issues which emerged from this comparison are delivery of agro-environmental services, sustainable land management and landscape conservation. Multiple spatial levels were considered, which included at least one administrative unit of policy decision/implementation. Consequently, the explicit (re)definition of some agronomic concepts and methods was needed. Regarding the interdisciplinary framework, the theses have stressed the interactions among agronomy, geography and ecology. All theses aimed at delivering tools for decision-making support, mainly in the form of cartography. Nevertheless the participation of local stakeholders was generally included as a final step; herewith the settings of stakeholders' involvement were various. In conclusion, we discuss how the produced knowledge has enhanced the land management issues in local planning tools. On these bases, we stress finally the issues at stake to strengthen the roles and contributions of agronomic oriented education and research to agricultural land management and development.
